Pedagogy of Leadership Style
Integrating the modality of leadership style to balance four modes of emotionally intelligent leadership
Coaching : Democratic : Affiliative : Visionary
How Leadership Style provides Integrative balance between
Four modes of emotional intelligence in leadership having a positive impact on the climate of an organisation depending on different contingencies
Visionary Leadership
Leader’s Modus Operandi: Mobilises people toward a vision
Style in a phrase: “Come with me”
Underlying emotional intelligence competencies: Self confidence, empathy, change catalyst
Contingency, when the style works best: When changes require a new vision or when a clear direction is needed
Less likely to be effective when you’re working with a team more experienced than you are
Affiliative Leadership
Leader’s Modus Operandi: Creates harmony and builds emotional bonds
Style in a phrase: “People come first”
Underlying emotional intelligence competencies: Empathy, building relationships, communication
Contingency, when the style works best: To resolve conflicts, heal rifts in a team or to motivate people during stressful circumstances
Less effective when there is no shared vision
Democratic Leadership
Leader’s Modus Operandi: Forges consensus through participation
Style in a phrase: “What do you think”
Underlying emotional intelligence competencies: Collaboration, team-leadership, communication
Contingency, when the style works best: to build consensus or get input from valuable employees drawing on their expertise and experience
Less effective if team members who are not motivated, knowledgeable and/or capable
Coaching Leadership
Leader’s Modus Operandi: Develop people for the future
Style in a phrase: “Try this”
Underlying emotional intelligence competencies: Developing others, empathy, self-awareness
Contingency, when the style works best: To help an employee improve performance or develop long-term strengths
Coaching or mentoring can fail when it’s used with an employee who is not making an effort, or who needs a lot of direction and feedback
